I was born in Norrköping, Sweden, but spend four of my childhood years in Genève where my father, Göte Hedenquist, worked at the World Council of Churches. After a couple of years in a Swedish elementary school and a couple of months at the age of 12 in a British Boarding School outside London, I spent four years at a Swedish Private Boarding school (Sigtunaskolans Internatläroverk (SS). In 1961 I matriculated at the Higher Learning College in Uppsala (Uppsala Högre Allmänna Läroverk). In 1972 I passed my MA in Modern Languages (French, Italian and Latin) at the University of Uppsala.
In 1965-67 I was employed as assisting teacher and study adviser in Italian and French at the Institute of Romance Languages, University of Uppsala. In 1967-69 I was also head teacher in Italian at the then Municipal School for Adults in Uppsala. In 1969-71 I was Director of the then Swedish Centre in Marseille, France. The centre was running social activities among North - African refugees.
In 1972-78 I was Head of the Language Section at the headquarters of one of the Swedish National Study Circle Unions (Medborgarskolans Förbundskansli) in Uppsala where I trained study organisers and study circle leaders in language learning and general study circle methodology. In 1978-82 I was Chief Education Officer at the headquarter of one of the Swedish National Trade Unions for Private Employees (Handelstjänstemannaförbundets (HTFs) in Stockholm (since 2007 part of the Union) where I designed and ran various training courses for local shop stewards.
During the years 1982-85 I participated as a pedagogical resource person in a non formal education project in Masase, Zimbabwe. The project was originally part of the Zimbabwean National Literacy Campaign with financial support from the Swedish National Development Agency SIDA, but it gradually developed into a more general community development program for the rural areas.
In 1987 I started my own consultancy company - JAH - Education & Development - which I am still running. During the years 1985-87 I was a part time evaluation expert at the National Board Of Education (Skolöverstyrelsen). At the same time I was also running a human resource development project at the headquarter of the Swedish Church Association for Education (Sveriges Kyrkliga Studieförbunds (SKS) in Stockholm and pursuing my research studies in pedagogy and the sociology of education at the Teacher Training College (Högskolan för Lärarutbildning i Stockholm (HLS). Since my mentor was the well-known professor Ulf P. Lundgren (who later became Director General for the National Agency for Education) my research orientation was naturally directed towards school research and frame factor theory.
During the second half of the 80's I also worked a couple of months every year at Sandö-U-Centrum (today SIDA Sandö) where I was teaching shona & country studies to Swedish volunteers who were going to work in Zimbabwe. I also produced a complete beginners course in Shona - textbook, grammar, exercise book, video - & audio tapes.
During the 90's I worked in different areas of human resource development. In 1990-2000 I worked as a short term consultant for SIDA/SIPU in Botswana and in Siberia. In Botswana I trained Education Officers and Chief Social Officers. In Siberia (Irkutsk, Ulan Ude) I trained Russian university teachers and public servants in the local and regional administration. I also designed and produced training materials for all these courses. The training was part of EUs TACIS programs.
During 1992-94 I was running 1-2 days seminars in the theory and methodology of evaluation with over 500 participants from various parts of Swedish Adult Education - municipal schools, study circle unions and folk high schools. During 1988-95 I evaluated the New Basic School Teacher Training Program at the University of Linköping.
During 1994-96 I designed and ran the Pedagogical Introduction Courses for newly graduated Phd's at the University of Linköping. During 1993-95 I also worked as a consultant for the Municipality of Karlskoga where I assisted in creating an evaluation program called Vision 2000 and trained headmasters and school staff in the theory and methodology of evaluation.
In 1995-1998 I was employed as an Assistant Professor at the University of Linköping. running training programs for folk high schools teachers in the subjects of adult education, language learning, communication, Internet and the methodology of evaluation.
In 1998-1999 I was employed as a Director of Studies at the National Agency for Education (Skolverket) in Stock-holm where I produced manuals on evaluation and developed quality indicators for the Swedish National School System.
Since 2000 I am giving full time attention to my own consultancy company. During 2000-2010 I travelled around Sweden running 1-2 day courses for school principals and administrative school personnel in hundreds of Swedish municipalities
in the art of formulating and evaluating educational goals. The experiences from these training activities were later summarised in a book which in a few years time sold more than 25.000 copies (Formulera och utvärdera mål).
Since 2002 I share my time between Uppsala and Cape Town. MY ENGLISH WILL - my children know the password!
